Now in its 34th year, the U.S. Central Open is one of the region's longest-running Taekwondo championships — bringing together competitors of every age and rank for a full day of forms, sparring, and special events at Grand Master Won's Taekwondo's own Main Gym.

Competitors of all styles are welcome. Divisions run from Tigers (ages 4–5) all the way through the Ultra division (40+), with events for every belt level.

  • Poomsae (Forms) & Kyorugi (Sparring) divisions for every age and rank
  • Special events: Hapkido self-defense, Breaking, Weapons, Demo Team, and more
  • Team awards for the top 3 schools by competitor count
  • Free admission for spectators — come cheer on the competitors

Age Divisions

Every division competes in both Poomsae (Forms) and Kyorugi (Sparring), grouped by belt rank within each age group.

Every belt rank within a division is welcome. Divisions may combine an adjacent rank or age if fewer than four competitors are registered, and each division is capped at a maximum of four competitors. Kyorugi (sparring) divisions are further split by weight, gender, and rank.

🥋 Hapkido Self-Defense

Demonstrate practical self-defense technique in front of the judges' panel.

🧱 Breaking

Power and Technical divisions. Scored on difficulty, number of boards, accuracy, speed, and power — max 1 minute, 2 attempts. Boards available for purchase at the door; please bring your own volunteer board holder.

🤸 Poomsae Variations

Pair Poomsae, Team Forms (3+ competitors), Freestyle Poomsae, and Family Poomsae.

🗡️ Weapons

Gumdo/sword, nunchucks, bo staff, and other traditional weapons forms.

🦵 Double Roundhouse Bag Kicks

Alternating-leg roundhouse kick combinations against the bag.

♿ Para (Special Needs)

Forms and Special Events divisions for competitors with special needs.

🎭 Demo Team

Showcase choreographed team demonstrations.

The Fine Print

Rules, Awards & Notices

Competition Rules

  • USA Taekwondo and AAU rules apply.
  • Eliminations: all belts, 3 rounds (1 min. each) — winner of 2 of 3 rounds advances.
  • All Taekwondo forms are acceptable in form competition.

Awards

  • Kyorugi, Poomsae & Special Events: 1st, 2nd, and two 3rd places each receive a trophy and/or medal.
  • Team Awards: top 3 schools by competitor count (minimum 11 competitors) receive a special team award.
  • All referees receive a special award.

Special Notices

  1. One Headmaster or Instructor's coach fee is waived per school; $35 for additional coaches ($25 late fee at the door).
  2. Lunch and dinner provided to all Officials, Referees, and Volunteers.
  3. Long-distance Masters/Instructors reimbursed $100/night for hotel stay: 8+ competitors = 1 night, 15+ competitors = 2 nights.

Equipment Requirements

  • Fist, forearm, shin & instep protection.
  • Protective cup (males).
  • Mouthpiece (all fighting competitors).
  • Chest protector and head gear.
